Shane Chandler, while with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and James Cutler Architects, worked on a 45,000 s.f. compound for the Gates family. The compound consists of living quarters, indoor swimming pool, exercise and trampoline room, sauna, art gallery, movie theater, large reception hall, small reception hall, full size comercial kitchen, guest rooms, library, computer/information center, staff building, boat house, garage for twenty cars, guest house, and outdoor patios, courtyards, private and public gardens and sport courts.
The complex is designed into the steep landscape along Lake Washington coexisting seamlessly with the original natural environment giving the large complex an intimate and more personalized feel. The structure is built primarily of recycled heavy timber members from warehouses built in the twenties, stone and granite from around the world and concrete.
The complex is used as an extension to the Microsoft Campus for entertaining business as well as personal guests. The entire complex is a showcase for new technological devices that are being developed by Microsoft and are integrated into the architecture to allow for seamless unobtrusive use that fits in naturally with the architecture and landscape.
